Chapter 10
Abe had given Miss Perry some space over the last few days, but with each passing moment, the marked attention of Lord Herbert had started to irk. Why, he couldnât fathom. He didnât want to marry the chit. He didnât want to marry anyone.
His motherâs parting words before she fled to Spain were to be careful of who he gave his heart to. She could have only meant one thing by that. That sheâd given her heart to his father, and in her time of need, when she had needed him to stand up with her against those who ridiculed and taunted her, he had not.
Up to this time in his life, Abe had not felt the smallest inclination to give his heart to anyone. To let another in to know all his dark, ugly secrets. Until Miss Perry, that was.
Abe started at the thought, running a hand through his hair. What the blazes was he talking about? He didnât feel anything beyond mild amusement with Miss Perry. For all her pretty looks and ample bank balance, she held no special place in his life.
Did she?
He swore, storming, more than strolling toward the stables. He stood corrected. She wasnât just amusement, she was the sole reason he was out in the country for a blasted week. He needed her to sign off on a specific investment that would hurt her financially.
Abe had decided that heâd not let her invest all her money. He wasnât that much of an ass, but he would have her spend enough that it would require adjustments to her household.
His friends, if they found out what he intended, would call him a bastard, and maybe he was. But the Vance family was cruel, unforgivingly bitter toward his mother, and heâd not let them get away with it. The old Viscountess Vance had been crafty with loyal accountants who had not seen fit to invest in anything, but Miss Perry was different. From his investigations into her, heâd found out she had hired her own solicitor, more modern and forward-thinking than her late auntâs.
Solicitors who were easily persuaded into foolhardy investments suggested by a peer of the realm.
Abe came to an abrupt halt at the sight of Miss Perry walking arm in arm in the gardens with Lord Herbert. The pompous lord smiled down at her and even Abe had to admit that he looked genuine with his interest.
He wouldnât let that bastard have her either. Lord Herbert always managed to get what he wanted, but not anymore. He would too have his day, and at the hands of Abe, he would ensure that.
For the life of him, he could not see what Miss Perry saw in the pretentious fool. Lord Perfect, who didnât step out of line or do anything that went against his motherâs will. If Miss Perry wished to marry into that lofty family, she would have to impress the old battleax. Women from far wealthier families than hers and with loftier connections had failed.
